CHINESE APPS ALTERNATIVES: MADE IN INDIA
The Indian Government has blocked 59 Chinese apps, including some of the most popular names such as TikTok, UC Browser, Clash of Kings, and ShareIt. The decision was taken in the midst of a huge backlash against China following the face-off of Ladakh on 15 June in which 20 Indian soldiers were martyred.
Inputs from intelligence agencies have suggested that these Chinese applications have been used either as spyware or ransomware and are in direct breach of the terms of service, violating the privacy of the customer. The ban was enforced pursuant to Section 69A of the IT Act with the related provisions of the 2009 Rules on Information Technology (Procedure and Safeguards for Blocking Access to Data by the Public).

Considering the current political and geo-social environment, the Indian government has made a notable effort to move away from the dependency on Chinese technology by banning some of the most popular apps. Although it might appear to be insignificant or of low impact, this could be just the start of a new technological revolution in India, and in order to have a lasting impact, it’s essential for us, as consumers and users of technology to support the decision and understand the nationalistic sentiment behind this strategic move.
